On top of the world, or down in the valley… you’ve got to keep flying.”
Fair winds and following seas to Hollywood legend Tom Skerritt, who has passed away at the age of 93.
To generations of film fans, he was the ultimate cool, calm, and commanding presence on screen. In Top Gun, he brought unforgettable gravitas and heart to the role of Commander Mike “Viper” Metcalf—the steady leader who grounded Maverick when he needed it most and reminded us all what true leadership looks like.
Beyond TOPGUN’s flight line, Skerritt gave us legendary performances across decades of iconic cinema and television:
Captain Dallas in Alien
Duke Forrest in MASH*
Sheriff Jimmy Brock in Picket Fences (earning him a well-deserved Emmy)
Drum Eatenton in Steel Magnolias
Reverend Maclean in A River Runs Through It
A U.S. Air Force veteran in real life, he also spent his later years empowering fellow veterans through creative storytelling and community support.
Thank you for the timeless performances, the steady hand, and the incredible memories on and off the screen. You’ll always have a spot at the top of the ladder.
Rest in peace, Viper. 🫡 Fly high.
