Tens of thousands of aviation enthusiasts at the Royal International Air Tattoo (RIAT) were treated to a historic sight this afternoon as the Royal Air Force’s new E-7 Wedgetail AEW Mk1 made its first airshow appearance in a spectacular flypast with the iconic Red Arrows.
The momentous flypast, captured by photographers like Cpl Phil Dye and AS1 Iwan Lewis, marked a significant milestone for the RAF’s future operational capabilities. The E-7 Wedgetail, a cutting-edge airborne early warning and control (AEW&C) platform, was flanked by the Red Arrows’ Hawk jets, creating a unique and unforgettable formation that drew cheers from the crowd.
The Wedgetail is widely regarded as the most capable and operationally-proven AEW&C aircraft in service today. Its advanced radar and battle management systems are designed to provide unparalleled situational awareness, directing offensive and defensive forces and enhancing the survivability of allied assets in a hostile environment. This “eye in the sky” will play a crucial role in supporting both UK and NATO operations for years to come.
The new aircraft will serve under the historic No. 8 Squadron and will be based at RAF Lossiemouth, Scotland. This location will create a powerful synergy, as the Wedgetail will operate alongside the nine-strong fleet of P-8 Poseidon maritime patrol aircraft. Both platforms are based on the widely-used Boeing 737 Next Generation airframe, which will allow for significant operational and maintenance advantages for the RAF.
As the E-7 Wedgetail begins its journey into full operational service, its debut at RIAT alongside the Red Arrows served as a powerful statement of the RAF’s commitment to cutting-edge innovation and a new era of airborne surveillance.
